This photo, taken on May 1st, 2013, shows the Boise River Bridge. The Northern portion of the bridge is to the right and the Southern portion is to the left.

There are four remaining spans that still need girders (spans 1-4).  Those girders will be set the first week of June.  77 of the 121 girders have been set in this photo, as well as the first three concrete deck placements.

Projected completion date: Summer 2014

The first 33 girders have been set, covering three spans.  The final bridge will consist of 11 spans and 121 girders.

This photo, also taken on January 16th, shows the four cranes that are being used to set the girders into place.

The girders have begun to arrive for the Boise River Bridge.  The photo at the left shows an aerial view of the girders traveling to the site.  Each girder is 157 feet long and 6 feet deep.

The first two girders were set on Monday, January 7th.  Six more girders were set on Wednesday, January 9th.  Each span contains 11 girders.

The plan is to begin setting girders over the Boise River on January 7th, 2013.  The girders are massive…each girder is seven feet tall and 157 feet wide.

The Central Valley Expressway Coalition held its Fall Quarterly Meeting on Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012, with Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter as keynote speaker.  The Governor was enthusiastically welcomed by approximately 60 attendees who turned out to hear the Governor speak of Idaho’s transportation needs and the challenges the state faces looking forward.  He was followed by Canyon County Commissioner David Ferdinand, who addressed the importance of infrastructure and industry within the area and the achievements Canyon County has enjoyed.  Sorrento-Lactalis Mozzarella Plant Manager, Lenny Bass, gave an overview of the cheese company’s history and operations, as well as why they chose Idaho, while emphasizing the importance of infrastructure in the transportation of product.  Senator Chuck Winder (R-14) then gave a legislative update and forecast regarding transportation funding, as well as some funding options likely to be considered in the next legislative session.  Finally, Connecting Idaho Partners Deputy Program Manager Dick Jacobson gave a project update on the construction of the first phase of the Central Valley Expressway: Boise River Crossing.

The Central Valley Expressway Coalition’s next quarterly meeting will be held in January 2013.

Here’s another recent photo from the ongoing Idaho 16 Boise River Bridge now being built. This photo shows a cofferdam, which allows the crew to work on the bridge in a dry environment. Once the space is established, they pump out the groundwater and drive the piles. You are looking at a pier column where the piles have been driven and cut off to the appropriate elevation. The metal reinforcement bar (rebar) has been tied and is being set up for a concrete placement. The yellow walls on the side are forms for the sides of the footings. They won’t pour the column until they have a form, which will then have to cure for about a week. There are three of these cofferdams required for each pier.

The Idaho Transportation Department has awarded the contract for construction of phase 2 (Phyllis Canal) of the Highway 16 extension project to Concrete Placing Company, the same Idaho company that is currently constructing the phase 1 Boise River Bridge Crossing.  Concrete Placing Company’s winning bid was $10.8 million.

The company is anticipated to have started excavation for the first two piers at the northern end of the Boise River Bridge.
